Moffett Independent Study programs are offered through our Adult Education school located on Moffett Boulevard. Generally, this program is for students 18 years old and older seeking to complete their high school diploma. Students currently enrolled in one of our high schools must contact their counselor for a referral to Independent Study before contacting Adult Education.

Freestyle Academy of Communication Arts & Technology (Freestle ACAT or Freestyle Academy, for short) is available to junior and senior students. Courses currently include Society, Politics, and Literature, Digital Photography and Graphic Design, Digital Film Production, Web Production and Audio Engineering. For examples of student work in English, Design, Film & WebAudio, go to our Student Media Gallery listings.

All students (Juniors and Seniors) can choose to attend Freestyle from EITHER 2.5 hour block schedule option below. These large blocks of time allows us to create a learning environment different from the traditional model. Two key features that distinguish our program will be project based learning and real world connections.

  • Option 1) AM Session - 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM except on Thusdays 10:15 - 11:15 AM
  • Option 2) PM Session - 1:00 to 3:30 except on Thursdays 1:00 - 2:30 PM

Juniors and Seniors together will attend Freestyle for English, Fine Arts and one Elective for 30 Units of credit for the year. There is a limit of 36 Juniors and 36 Seniors due to equipment constraints for each session. Juniors and Seniors will be in separate classes, not combined together in any class. An example two day schedule would look like this:

  • Day 1: First 1 hour 15 minutes in English or Design, a short break,
then the second 1 hour 15 minutes in Design or English.
  • Day 2: Entire 2 hour 30 minute block in either Film or WebAudio Production.
This two day schedule would then repeat itself. For more details, go to the Freestyle FAQ webpage.

Both 1st Year students (juniors) and 2nd Year students (seniors) enrolled at Freestyle Academy remain assigned to their home school Mountain View, Los Altos or Alta Vista for other classes such as Science, Math, Social Studies, etc. 1st Year students (72 Juniors) attend Introductory/Intermediate multimedia project based courses using industry standard tools such as software Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, Flash Catalyst, Garageband, Reason, Pro Tools, and Final Cut Pro on hardware tools such as Apple iMacs, MacBook Pro laptops, various digital still and video cameras, M-Audio digital audio recorders and Wacom electronic drawing pads along more traditional art supplies. 2nd Year (72 Seniors) students attend Advanced multimedia project based courses using the previously mentioned software and hardware in addition to ActionScript, JavaScript, After Effects, and Soundtrack Pro. 2nd Year students will also have the opportunity to participate in mentorships with local professionals.

Enrollment applications, due before the February break, are available on the Freestyle FAQ webpage.
